Don’t Starve

I was really excited about getting to play this on PS4 – and yes, yet another freebie for PlayStation Plus members. I haven’t played that much yet, but it’s pretty interesting so far, although I still am not doing great at all. But I think I’m finally getting a handle on what it is I need to do to survive, so let’s see if I can last longer this week. Oh, and killer aesthetics too.

Urban Trial Freestyle

image

This is also currently free if you’re a PlayStation Plus member – for Vita – and I really got addicted to playing it yesterday. I didn’t think I’d be into playing a “trials” game – I seem to remember trying Trials HD (different series) on XBLA, and not being interested in dealing with the difficulty of it. But here, I’m having fun, and it’s probably because even if you crash, restarting from the last checkpoint is extremely fast, instant really. Great game to have on a portable, and it looks great too.

DMC: Devil May Cry

This is currently free if you’re a PlayStation Plus member, so I’m finally getting around to playing it. Even though this is not usually a kind of game I seek out – combo fighters – I had been wanting to play it because it’s from Ninja Theory, and so I expected good things – I really do love Enslaved, a game I feel is greatly underrated, especially if you love adventure games. I’ve put in about an hour in DMC, and I’m having a blast so far. I don’t mind the new “emo” Dante, and yes, I loved the quip about the white hair being gone – fuck that white hair. I’m looking forward to playing more of this.

Aku no Hana

I wrote about Aku no Hana when I first started watching it last fall, and wanted to write this follow-up now that I’m done watching the first season – I’d only watched the first 6 episodes, and so now finally got around to watching the rest (the last 7, that I watched in one go). This is truly an amazing piece of work, and although I did find the main character’s constant hesitation and self-doubt to be annoying, those last 3 episodes are really quite something. I think it has some of the best cinematography I’ve seen on TV. I can’t even begin to understand where the story can go following that ending, but it ends saying that it’s the conclusion of part 1, and I know it only covers half of the original manga series, so I really hope the show was successful enough for them to go ahead with a second season.

Rush

I really loved this, and it was even more interesting for me since I didn’t really know the story – just that Lauda had been seriously injured. I like that it focuses on pretty much just one season, and wow, what a season that was, it’s almost hard to believe it really happened. And the races themselves are brilliantly shot, although I would have appreciated a few more faraway overhead perspectives, to get a better feel for the positioning of everyone.

Riddick

This movie is a lot better than you’d think. Sure, it’s cheesy as all hell, but in a delicious way. For me, it really reminded me of old school 80s action movies, stuff like Aliens, with all those classic character archetypes – the tough chick, the bastard, the spiritual one, etc. – and in a way it felt refreshing to watch, compared to the type of action movies we get these days (more grounded). I also love how it takes its time, like the long opening that just has Riddick dealing with the wildlife on the planet he’s stranded on. As a whole, it kinda feels like something that you’d have read in Heavy Metal magazine, and I’m definitely OK with that.

Bad Grandpa

Full disclosure: I love all of the Jackass movies, and so it’s no big surprise that I loved this too. It’s stupid fun, and the scene in the strip joint with balls hanging had me in pain from laughing (loved the “Cherry Pie” bit at the end too). I think the movie got criticized a bit for trying to wrap all the bits around a loose storyline, but I didn’t have a trouble with that, and thought it actually made for a good ride – just like it did for Borat.

Star Trek Trexels

When I first heard about this game – before it came out – I thought it had the makings of something pretty cool, based on the pixelated aesthetics, and the fact that it uses music and sound effects from the original TV series. Then, when it came out, I was turned off by what I was hearing about all the in-app purchasing – to a game that is not even free (although it’s just $3). A friend of mine told me yesterday he was having fun with it, and so I decided to give it a go. So far, yeah, it’s pretty fun, and although I can see the icky trappings of free-to-play stuff in the background, it hasn’t affected me yet. It really is worth playing for the great sounds throughout, and I’m digging the simple gameplay that you use in your encounters on planets (combat, negotiations, researching, etc.) Who knows how long I’ll last, but for now I’m having fun.

Bravely Default Demo

They’ve just released a demo for the upcoming US release of this (in February I think), and it’s pretty interesting that the demo itself is its own thing, not just a part of the full game – and you can unlock stuff in this that will carry to the full release. I’ve only started playing it, and so far I’m really digging the art style, but I think it’s going to take some time for me to wrap my head around the combat system, and how/when to use the brave/default mechanic properly – after just 2 battles my party was pretty much wiped out.

Despicable Me 2

I thought the first one was pretty fun to watch, but this one felt like it was just going through the motions. Sure, still had a few laughs, and I did like the Kristen Wiig character, but for the most part it didn’t really grab me much. Don’t think I’ll watch a third one, if they make one.
