House of Cards

I watched the first season of House of Cards when it was originally released, and quite enjoyed it, but then for some reason never got around to watching the following seasons, even though I did have an interest in doing so. While I was hit with the flu a couple of weeks ago, I binged through seasons 2 and 3, and am currently a bit passed half of season 4, and wow, what a fantastic series. I can definitely now say that it gets added to my top 10 list of all-time favorite TV series. I remember reading that some people felt season 3 was a bit of a disappointment, but I found myself enjoying it just as much as the rest. And I’m really enjoying season 4, and can’t wait to see how it concludes. Gotta love Netflix.

Doctor Who

Another series I find myself enjoying again is Doctor Who. I was a big fan of the series ever since its modern relaunch (with Christopher Eccleston), and stuck with it until the start of the season with Peter Capaldi (season 8). I didn’t have anything against Capaldi, it was more me finding myself enjoying the series less and less during the previous seasons (with Matt Smith, who I did still like as a character). I was excited to see what Capaldi would do with the role, but after just 1-2 episodes I’d had enough and stopped watching. Ever since, I’ve been hearing great things about his run, and so I’ve decided to jump in again, and am having a lot of fun so far (5 episodes in). Maybe I just needed a bit of a breather.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

This is another one of those series that I’ve been meaning to watch for what feels like forever, and I finally decided to go ahead and make the jump  – it’s a bit daunting, considering the series just started an 11th season. I’m almost through the first season (which is only 7 episodes long), and yeah, I’m in. What a deliciously despicable bunch of people. Truly, truly despicable. And that’s what’s so great about it. Looking forward to seeing how things evolve over the seasons.

Maron

I’ve been watching season 3 of Maron on Netflix, and after what felt like a bit of a lackluster second season, I’m finding this one to be really great so far (I’m about half-way through it). I’m a long-time listener of his WTF podcast, and was really excited when this series first launched, so it’s good to be enjoying it like this again. I also find it hilarious that he keeps slipping in digs at BJ Novak as the season is moving along.

Halt and Catch Fire

I love this series so much, it’s ridiculous. There’s something about tech and computing in the 80s that I find so damn sexy, and this show is basically 80s computing porn, with a good cast and good storyline. Oh, and the music is fantastic too. I just recently watched the first season on Netflix – had watched the first episode or two when it originally aired, but decided to wait until the whole season was over to watch it, and just hadn’t gotten around to it yet – and binged it in 2 days. I so can’t wait to watch season 2, and I’m incredibly happy to hear it’s already been renewed for a 3rd season.

The League

I’ve had this series in my Netflix list for a while, and finally got around to watching the 6-episode first season this week. I’d heard it was a funny show, and the presence of Mark Duplass was also a draw. This is indeed a super funny show – doesn’t matter if you care about fantasy sports leagues or not, as that’s just the excuse to get these characters together – and I was also very happy to see that Nick Kroll is part of it. Very much looking forward to watching the rest of the seasons.

Marco Polo: One Hundred Eyes

Marco Polo is one of those Netflix series I’ve been meaning to watch for what feels like forever, and simply haven’t gotten around to it. I saw that there was a new half-hour special that popped up – it’s in part to tease the upcoming second season – and so I decided to watch it. Really liked what I saw. I don’t know if the series is really like this or not, but I loved all the kung-fu action in it. It did its job well, since I now plan on checking out season 1 soon.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

I watched the first two seasons of this a while back (when I was still in Japan), and recently decided to jump back in with season 3, and I gotta say that I’m really enjoying it, much more than I remembered. I’m sure it’s in part because of my current enthusiasm for all things Star Wars (well, most things Star Wars), but yeah, it’s well made, and easily surpasses what we saw from the prequels. It’s nice to know that I have a whole bunch more to get through, and that it’s all handily available through Netflix (and I think season 6 is in fact exclusive to Netflix).

Parks and Recreation

I used to really like this show, but then stopped following it by the end of season 5 for no special reason. This past year I’ve been watching season 6 on Netflix, episodes here and there, and then last night finished off the season by watching the last 4-5 in a row. I gotta say that the last episode sure did feel like a (satisfying) series finale. It’s remained a fun show throughout – I especially liked the bits with that crazy board game towards the end of the season – and I’m looking forward to watching the short season 7 when it gets added to Netflix.

F Is for Family

I’m aware of Bill Burr, having seen him on talk shows and the like, but I’m not really familiar with his style of comedy, so didn’t know what to expect from this new animated series that he created for Netflix. It debuted the other day, and I watched the first episode, and I liked it. It’s pretty damn funny, and I quite like the 1973 setting – and also that it can be more crass than shows on network TV. Definitely looking forward to watching more.
