The Last of Us

I’d of course been wanting to play this along with everyone else, but hey, better late than never (and thank you Play-Asia for the great sales price). I’m about 5 hours in and it’s definitely as good as everyone has been saying. The outdoor environments are fantastic – despite the death and decay, the lush green overgrowth adds beauty to the surroundings. Also, same great acting and characters that you expect from a Naughty Dog game. Just makes me that much more excited for the Uncharted game we’ll get to play on the PS4 – although I do prefer the stealth combat of this game over the mindless shooting of the Uncharted series.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

I started playing this earlier in the week – I recently grabbed it at the crazy sales price of $10 on the PSN Store – and boy am I loving it. I do still enjoy getting into a good JRPG every once in a while, and this feels like it’s going to scratch that itch perfectly. Ghibli fan that I am, I’m of course digging the Ghibli touches in this, from the character designs all the way to the lovely animated cut scenes that pop up every once in a while. The combat is also interesting – a bit more involved than simple menu selections – and some of the boss battles so far have already been challenging. As for the graphics, sure, it’s not what I now want from PS4-era games, but for something on the PS3 it looks lovely, and I especially love the way the world is rendered, with an almost painted quality. I also love the way your magic tome is presented, with beautifully designed and illustrated pages that you zoom in to read, giving you info on all aspects of the world, as well as offering up some fun fables. I’m only about 5 hours in, but so far this feels like it should have gotten way more attention that it did.

BioShock Infinite

This is another game I picked up last weekend on sale from the PSN Store – for something like $15. I’ve of course been wanting to play this all year, and glad that I’m finally getting around to it. From what I’ve played so far (a few hours), I’m absolutely loving being in this world, and I’m digging the story beats so far – and the seriousness/social issues it brings up – but where I find it lacking is in the gameplay. Battles are fine, with the mix of vigor powers and gunplay being pretty fun, but I’m already SO tired of having to pick up fucking coins all over the place. Entering a room and then having the only interactive elements being to pick up ammo, food, and money is just a bore.

Rayman Legends

Picked this up for Vita last week because it was on sale on the PSN Store – and I think I may have access to the PS3 version as well. So damn good. If you like Rayman Origins, then it’s just more of that, but looking even better – believe it or not – and with fun new gameplay gimmicks like levels where you don’t really control the character but rather touch the screen to interact with elements of the level. Oh, and did I mention how good this game looks? Truly like playing a living cartoon, looks absolutely stunning on the Vita screen.

DC Universe Online

To my surprise, I really got sucked into this, and put in quite a few hours. I remember trying it out when it first came out on PS3, and I wasn’t particularly impressed, but this time I was quite wowed by the visuals – this game looks VERY crisp, especially for an MMO – and ended up really getting into fighting bad guys in Gotham City (my mentor in the game is Batman, so I assume you start out in different areas/cities depending on who your hero/villain mentor is), teaming up with DC heroes, and levelling up  to get fun new powers. It’s free-to-play, so you’ve got nothing to lose by trying it out.

Sound Shapes

This is like Flower, in that if you have the PS3 version you can download the new PS4 version for free. Since I originally played it on Vita, it’s hard for me to tell how much better it is than the PS3 version, but again, like with Flower, it gave me a nice excuse to revisit the game. I truly love this game – such a great combo of music and visuals – and you really need to own it if you don’t (to play on Vita, PS3, or PS4).

Grand Theft Auto V

Yes, like everyone else on this planet, I’m playing Grand Theft Auto V, and frankly, having an absolute blast. I could just drive around Los Santos for hours and hours and hours… (and yes, even cycling is super fun).

Final Fantasy XIV

I love this game so much. Sure, I was frustrated during the first weeks because of the issues with the servers, not being able to get on to play, but things are normal now, and it’s a joy to hop in and have some adventures in this world. I’m also lucky that I have a lot of friends playing this, and so it’s going to be fun teaming up in the future for the big battles. This is my first real MMO experience – I played a tiny bit of WoW quite a while ago, but got out because I didn’t want to invest more time into it. I also love that I’m playing this on the PS3 – I still don’t quite like playing games on my Mac as much as on my consoles (home and portable).

Defiance

Because I like the TV series, I’d been wanting to play the Defiance MMO for a while now – had heard that it wasn’t amazing, but good fun – and I finally started playing it last night (recently bought it for $20 on Play-Asia, but it’s also now available for that price through the PSN Store). I’m just a couple of hours in, but so far I’m having a blast. I could probably only recommend this if you’re a fan of the show, but if you are, then it’s great to be able to experience more aspects of that world. And you gotta love being able to call in a 4-wheeler anytime you want to get around the map. The only problem though is that Final Fantasy XIV is just around the corner…

Dark Souls

I played quite a bit of Dark Souls earlier this year, but eventually put it aside as I got to a point where frustration was getting to me. But the other day, my friend Johnny came over to act as “guide” for me playing through it, offering helpful pointers throughout, and it was a blast. Over about 4 hours of play, I got way past where I’d gotten before on my own, and managed to take down – with some online visitor help – some of the big baddies. Who says that all great co-op experiences have to revolve around having 2 players play at the same time? Not me.
