Next PauseTalk

Forgot to post my regular PauseTalk reminder earlier this week, so here goes: PauseTalk Vol. 46 happens this Monday (November 8) at Cafe Pause, with the usual start time of 20:00 — it was pushed back a week so as not to clash with Tokyo Design Week.

I also always send out a reminder through the Facebook group — here’s the event page for Vol. 46.

Typhoon Closes Down Tokyo Designers Week

A word of warning if you were planning on checking out Tokyo Designers Week at the Meiji Jingu Gaien grounds today (Saturday, October 30) — the event is closed because of the thread of a typhoon.

PauseTalk Skip Week

Just a note to remind everyone that the next PauseTalk will not be happening this coming Monday (November 1) as it normally would, so as not to conflict with all of the Tokyo Design Week festivities. Instead, it’s being pushed back a week, to Monday, November 8.

Magazine Library Extended

As I just posted on SNOW Magazine, the latest edition of the always excellent “Magazine Library” has been extended until the end of the month due to popular demand — big congrats to David and the crew for putting together another great exhibition.

I had a chance to quickly check it out last week — my wife was waiting outside with our dog, so I couldn’t stay very long — but I did note that the focus this time is more on sales. There’s a great selection on display though, and I think the prices are pretty good, so well worth checking out if you’re looking to stock up on some good reads. I do also love that they hung issues around the space (and outside the shop) — another thing I want to steal for the next SNOW Magazine Cafe.

This video was put together by the organizers, and gives you a great peek at what to expect from the show.

Update: I’ve been told by organizers that every magazine included in the show can actually be read on the premises, they are not just being sold. So definitely take the time to drop by and browsed through a great selection of titles. It should also be noted that the space is right by the store’s cafe area.

PauseTalk Vol. 45

Big thanks again to everyone who made it out to Cafe Pause in Ikebukuro this past Monday for PauseTalk Vol. 45. As has been the norm for the past few months, we had about 20 in attendance, and I’m starting to feel that this is the optimum size for getting some good discussions going with most of the people there participating and feeling like they’re part of the group — with the bigger crowds, we end up with rows of seats in the back, which turns it into more of a spectator thing (which it shouldn’t).

And as with last month, Michael Holmes was there with his “big ass camera” (that’s my trademark), and so we should get another great photo gallery from the event — I’ll post it here when it’s up.

As in previous events, I put out an attendance sheet, and so below is a partial list of those who came to the event. For the next PauseTalk (Vol. 46), I’m thinking it will take place on the second Monday of November (on the 8th), since the first Monday would put it smack dab in the middle of Tokyo Design Week, which is going to be a rather hectic period for many.

PauseTalk Next Week

Here we are, last day of September, and that means that the next PauseTalk (Vol. 45) is just around the corner. Come join us this coming Monday (October 4) at Cafe Pause, at the usual start time of 20:00 (with the cafe reserved from 19:30). Here’s the Facebook event page, if you like such things.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, last month’s edition had a lower turnout, but we ended up getting some great photos courtesy of Michael Holmes — see the Facebook gallery here. The close-up wide angle shots are pretty fun (below, me looking like a freak).

Clips and Zines

If you’ll allow me to go analog for a moment, I need to say how much I love the way they displayed all of the participating zines at the launch party (or “reading room”) for the terrific-looking Fanzines book. It’s incredibly simple, using clips, and my first thought was that I should have done something similar during last month’s SNOW Magazine Cafe. The one problem this poses is that I did want everything in the show to be readable by everyone, but it’s something I need to keep in mind for a future exhibition, especially if I can get extra copies (one to hang, one on table/shelf for people to grab and read).

PauseTalk Vol. 44

I’d like to thank everyone who made it out to the cafe last night for PauseTalk Vol. 44. Although still a smaller group than in past months (we were probably 20 or so) it was a nice mix — as is often magically the case — including lots of new faces, and a few old ones that hadn’t checked in for a while. Topics covered included web aesthetics (Japan vs. the West), filming in Japan, getting the “old guard” to sign those checks to get projects moving forward, and the Foreign Correspondents Club (to join or not to join).

As I only realized not long before heading out that my printer was out of ink, I didn’t get to bring attendance sheets, and so no list this month. The next one (Vol. 45) will take place October 4.

PauseTalk Tonight

Just your friendly neighborly reminder that this month’s PauseTalk (Vol. 44) happens tonight (September 6) at Cafe Pause, with the usual start time of 20:00 (and the cafe reserved from 19:30). As previously mentioned, I’ll bring out the magazines from last month’s SNOW Magazine Cafe, for anyone who didn’t get at chance to check out the event.
