NHL Revealed

image

After the all-too-short 24/7 series ended I was hoping we could get more, and this is pretty much what the 7-episode NHL Revealed series. It’s pretty much just as good as the HBO show, except that we don’t have the great Liev Schreiber narration. Oh, and I wish there was more Habs coverage.

Super Motherload

image

Speaking of digging games (see SteamWorld Dig), strangely enough I’ve been playing another one, and that’s Super Motherload on PS4 (it’s a cross-buy game with PS3, and I grabbed it on sale last week). It boasts 4-player multiplayer, which I haven’t tried yet, but even just playing alone is really fun. I quite like the aesthetics – sort of a retro 80s illustrated look – and the story bits are pretty fun too. I’m glad I picked it up.

SteamWorld Dig

I just spent the weekend playing this, and wow, what fun. When it originally came out on 3DS last year, I remember a few friends praising it a lot, and so figured I would eventually get it. It’s a digging/mining game in which you try and uncover new areas, upgrading your robot with new gear by also mining gems along the way. Creating your maps on the way down is surprisingly addictive, and the controls are just right. It’s around $10 or less on the eShop, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Ender’s Game

I wanted to watch this because the original Ender’s Game novel is one of my favorite sci-fi reads. If you already know how it ends, you do miss out on a lot, but I still found myself digging seeing the story visualized – and the visuals are definitely well done.

Thor: The Dark World

I don’t like the character of Thor, I just don’t. Never really liked him in comics, no matter how well the books are written. I just don’t care for the whole Norse mythology mixed in with super-heroics thing – feels so cheesy. But I remember finding the trailers for this looking pretty interesting – focusing on a mix of fantasy and sci-fi – and I was pleasantly entertained by it. Thankfully, there’s not much that takes place on Earth – and oh man is that Kat Dennings character annoying – and the fantasy/sci-fi stuff is all exciting to watch. If they continue in this vein, I’m certainly up for another Thor film – although I’m sure the focus will just go back to Earth the next time around.

Black Sails

As with a lot of shows, I’m not going to get invested to quickly in this, but the first episode was pretty good – nice and piratey – and I’m certainly willing to see where it goes. It does look great, and pretty much everything looks like what you’ve experienced in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. I hope it ends up being more Spartacus than Da Vinci’s Demons (all of these are on Starz).

Top Gear

It’s good to be getting a new season of Top Gear, but I was really disappointed that the first episode didn’t kick off with a review of a new high-profile car. Looks like we’re going to be getting that in the second episode, but come on, isn’t it a tradition to start that way?
