This is a very weird movie, and I can’t recommend it enough. I watched it a few days ago, and I’m still thinking about it. I watched this pretty much after watching Villeneuve’s Prisoners – which I also really liked – but man, this is a much more interesting film. The extreme yellow color-correction did bother me a bit at first, but I eventually got over it. It’s just one of those movies that leaves you with more questions than answers (in fact, there are basically no answers, at least no obvious ones), and it’s then fun to read up opinions on it – the same feeling I had after watching Lost Highway for the first time. And Gyllenhaal continues to be one of my favorite actors.

Lucy
It’s no secret that I really don’t like Scarlet Johansson – I think she’s a terrible actress – but I still had fun watching this. It actually went much crazier than I thought it would, and that’s a good thing. It was a satisfying little movie to watch, and good to see Besson directing stuff like this again (not just producing).
The Shining
Doesn’t matter how many times I watch it, I’m always blown away by the opening. And even though Jack kinda does come off as a caricature of madness, that’s just because what he does here has become so insanely legendary. The only thing that bothers me to this day is how Jack gets out of the food storage. I know that the original book is completely upfront about the supernatural presence, but what I’ve always liked about Kubrick’s film is that except for that element, it can really go either way – spirits are really haunting the place, or it’s all Jack’s madness.
Terra Battle
This is the new RPG/strategy game from Final Fantasy’s Sakaguchi on iOS, and it’s available now on the Canadian iTunes Store – it comes out internationally on October 9. I’ve checked it out and have to say that the battle system is really cool. You play on a grid, with your party members and enemies represented by square icons, and you position your characters on the board in relation to the enemies to do attacks, use skills, etc. From what I’ve played so far, there’s a lot of strategy involved, so it’s definitely a step above what you usually get in a free-to-play iOS game. I do wish the story aspect was more developed – it’s limited to text between chapters, which is still interesting, but I would like more.
Star Wars Rebels
Well this series is certainly off to a great start. The Clone Wars series was OK, but this is the Star Wars that I like (around the time of the original trilogy). It’s so great to see this era of Star Wars portrayed in CG like this, and I’m enjoying the storyline so far, and the way they’re portraying the Jedi – was pretty cool to see the reveal towards the end of the true nature of one of the main characters. Looking forward to watching more of this.
Prisoners
This was a hell of a good movie. Intense, sure, but great story, great characters, great acting, and interesting until the very end. More movies like this, please.
