  • Night Stroll

This short video dates back a few years, but it makes for a lovely night journey through areas of Tokyo — with nicely composed animated geometric graphics superimposed on most of the shots. It was created by Tangram‘s Tao Tajima. Found via Tokyo Soup.

  • Derive

I’m quite looking forward to the completion of Derive, “a short film project set in Tokyo which explores the cyberpunk roots of the city,” by Cody Brendan and James Ellingham. Watch the trailer here. Found via Canvas.

  • 23 Koffee

23 Koffee looks like a great project that centers around a package of 23 types of coffee beans, each sourced from one of Tokyo’s 23 wards. They’ve also set up an Instagram hashtag (see the site for info) to chronicle coffee recommendations from each ward. Found via Canvas.

  • Cold in Yokohama

I really love “Cold in Yokohama,” a series of illustrations produced by Tokyo-based Mateusz Urbanowicz. As he explains on this page from his site (which also includes a 20-minute “making of” video), he was inspired by watching Ghibli’s From Up on Poppy Hill, wanting to recreate the Yokohama of that film, that no longer exists.…

  • The Art of War for Kids

Our man Jake Adelstein — who thankfully picked up quite a few of my books and old movies when I left Tokyo — and Mari Yamamoto take a look for the Daily Beast at a fun new book for kids that covers, well, Sun Tzu’s Art of War.

  • Prints by Justin Epperson

I wrote about Justin’s great Tokyo photography a while back — make sure to follow him on Instagram, where he shares new shots on a daily basis — and now he’s started selling prints and a tee through Redbubble. I think the shot included in this post would look fantastic on a wall.

  • Weaving Shibusa

Weaving Shibusa looks like a fascinating documentary about the love, dedication, and obsession to denim that can be found in Japan. Watch the trailer here, and here’s a piece at Esquire about the film. There doesn’t seem to be any info on when it will be available to stream though (it premiered at a theater…

  • Visiting a Sofubi Master

This is a great little video by Jian Shen of a visit to Goto-San, a master of sofubi (soft vinyl) toys, that also features my buddy Don Kratzer. If you like what you see and want to know more about the world of sofubi, Don’s been doing a series of PechaKucha presentations on the topic…

  • Changes to Harajuku Station

Harajuku station certainly is iconic in its own way — I still remember enjoying working across the street from it, in full view, when I was editor at PingMag. A recent Monocle Minute newsletter has an update on what’s likely to happen when it gets renovated in time for 2020. Tens of thousands of people…

  • Ani-Kuri 15

I just watched a fantastic collection of animated shorts called Ani-Kuri 15. Produced for NHK back in 2007-2008, it’s comprised of 15 1-minute shorts each directed by some of the top names in the animation field, including Kon Satoshi (pictured), Mamoru Oshii, and Makoto Shinkai (in fact, it’s while searching for works by Shinkai that…
