Kung Fu Killer

My rekindled love for kung fu flicks – thanks to seeing Donnie Yen in Rogue One – continues with yet another Yen film (after watching the Ip Man trilogy), this time Kung Fu Killer. I guess the best way to describe this would be to say that it’s like the movie Seven, but with kung fu replacing the 7 deadly sins. Really enjoyed this, and has some pretty awesome fights throughout, including some fun moves towards the end that incorporates trucks. Like the Ip Man movies, this one’s on Netflix.

Bojack Horseman Christmas Special: Sabrina’s Christmas Wish

image

I just fell on this last night, a couple of hours before the end of Christmas, and I’m glad I watched it. It’s a really great parody of the type of Christmas episodes you’d see on sitcoms in the 80s (think Full House and Family Matters), and it reminds me that I really do need to get around to watching this series (I’ve only watched the first few episodes of season 1).

Ip Man 3

I definitely liked this, but it’s wasn’t as good as the first two films – it doesn’t have as many classic fight scenes, although the blade fight at the end was pretty great (and the best fight of the series is still the one between Yen and Sammo Hung on the table in Ip Man 2). I really loved watching all three movies this week, and can’t wait to see Ip Man 4, which is set for a 2018 release.

The OA

I’m only a couple of episodes in, but so far I’m very pleasantly surprised by The OA. I hadn’t heard anything about this until a few days before it was released on Netflix last week, and found the trailer to be quite intriguing. What I’m seeing so far is still wrapped in mystery – which is part of the fun – and I’m looking forward to seeing how it all pans out.

Ip Man 2

This afternoon I watched Ip Man 2, which is as good if not better than the first Ip Man movie. The fight sequence on a table with Sammo Hung is truly glorious, and gave me chills – Hung is also responsible for the action direction in all of the Ip Man movies. And the kid Bruce Lee bit at the end was pretty funny (Ip Man is famous for having trained Bruce Lee). I’d never watched this – which sorta follows the Rocky IV storyline, but in 50s Hong Kong under British rule – and now I can’t wait to watch the 3rd one.

Ip Man

Rogue One has put me in a Donnie Yen state of mind, and so I had a lot of fun the other night revisiting the first Ip Man movie. Great, great flick, as good if not better than I remembered, and Yen is a joy to watch throughout. I’m following this up with Ip Man 2 and 3, and then whatever else I can find on Netflix with him in it.

Rogue One

I loved Rogue One so damn much, that I can honestly say it’s my new favorite Star Wars movie. I loved it on so many levels, from the story, to the new cast of characters, to just, well, so many things. It’s the only Star Wars movie to make me well up a few times, and that includes during that initial Donnie Yen fight scene with Storm Troopers, which I through was so beautiful to see. In fact, Donnie Yen’s character was my favorite, and I’d so love to see him in a spinoff movie or TV series. But yeah, such a great film, more interesting to me than Force Awakens (which I did like a lot), and it makes me thankful that we are now going to get a variety of Star Wars movies, that go beyond the Skywalker saga.

Super Mario Run

I’ve been loving this. Sure, the fact that you need to be online at all times is an annoyance in that it prevents me from playing while on the subway, but it doesn’t change that the gameplay itself is hugely satisfying, and once you get past all of the levels, it’s also quite fun to concentrate on getting all of the special coins in each level. I think that “Toad Rally” is a pretty neat mode too, and find myself playing it much more than I thought I would. Currently my favorite character to use is Peach, who was also my character of choice in Super Mario Bros. 2.

Longest Night

This is also a supplemental experience to Night in the Woods (like Lost Constellation), except it’s more of a little music experiment. It doesn’t offer a fun story like Lost Constellation, but I enjoyed it for what it is, and the song that plays is a joy to take in – after I was done playing, I kept listening to it, and the rest of the Lost Constellation soundtrack. It’s also a free download.

Lost Constellation

A few weeks ago I bought that big bundle of indie games for charity (over 100 games), and now that it’s the holiday break, I decided to start digging into them. My first pleasant surprise was the Itch.io app, that basically serves as a Steam-like way to deal with your Itch.io-purchased game library. So Lost Constellation is called a supplemental experience to the upcoming Night in the Woods, a game I was already interested in, but didn’t realize how much until playing this. This is a fairly long (maybe an hour or so) adventure game experience, and I had a wonderful time playing it last night. It made me that much more excited for the release of Night in the Woods, which I’ll now be grabbing as soon as I can. You can download it for free.
