A few months ago I wrote about getting the first Assassin’s Creed Chronicles game, China, and although I was quite enjoying the start, I got a bit sidetracked at the time and forgot to get back to it. This past weekend I finally remembered to get back to it, and found myself playing through the entire thing in two sessions. In fact, I had such a great time with it that I didn’t want to stop, and so picked up the set that includes the two sequels, India and Russia, and so far India is just as fun and engrossing as China (although I did prefer the calligraphy-inspired art in the latter). I’m just so in love with the 2D stealth gameplay – this for me is way more fun than the regular Assassin’s Creed games – and it makes me wish they’d just keep making these with even more country settings. Yes, Mark of the Ninja did this kind of thing first, and although that is a really great game, I prefer the country-flavor and setting of these Chronicles game.
I picked this up a while back during a PSN sale, but hadn’t gotten around to really spending time with it until recently. I gotta say, I’m having a really good time playing this. I absolutely love the stealth gameplay in 2D, and the art direction is really fantastic, deeply inspired by traditional Chinese art. Even if you’re burnt out on the main Assassin’s Creed games, don’t let that make you skip this, it really is its own thing. Also, I’m now very much looking forward to the next game in this series, which is going to be set in India.
This is absolutely the most fun I’ve had with an Assassin’s Creed game – and I’m quite a big fan of the series, having played through and finished all of them (except the first one, which I didn’t finish). It starts off like a regular AC game, but a few hours in, once you have access to your ship and crew, as well as all parts of the game world, and start visiting islands to explore or pillaging passing ships, this game turns into something incredibly fun and special. As for the PS4 visuals: wow.
