Tomb Raider Definitive Edition

Another game I picked up in the PSN E3 sale is Tomb Raider Definitive Edition. I played through and loved this game when it came out on PS3 (although I did get annoyed at some of the overlong shooting sequences) and seeing the gameplay for the next one got me excited for the series again, and I had been wanting to revisit this with PS4-level graphics. I grabbed it for $12 as part of the sale, which makes me happy. I haven’t started playing it yet, but this time I want to spend more time doing some of the side activities, including finding all the secret tombs – and I’m so happy to hear that there will be more tomb exploration in the next game, as that’s the part of these games that I truly enjoy.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

I bought a few games through the PSN E3 sale, including Dragon Age: Inquisition, which I’ve been patiently waiting to play. I’m a big fan of the series, having played through the first two and enjoying both (yes, even the second one, despite its many flaws), and so far (4-6 hours in) this entry is blowing me away. Right now it feels like it’s better on every level, including the look, the size of the world, the structure, the combat, the characters… (it’s too early to comment on the story, but I’m enjoying it so far). This game has completely sucked me in, and I’m glad to finally be experiencing it (and for a satisfying price of $30).

Sense8

Another series I’ve been enjoying – and yup, it’s also in the sci-fi genre – is Sense8, the series that the Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski created for Netflix. I’ve still only had the chance to watch the first 2-3 episodes, but I’ve been enjoying it so far. The characters are all quite interesting, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they all start to interact with each other. I really like the way the show is shot too, it has a nice clearness/crispness to it, and I love the opening credit montage.

Wayward Pines

A series I can now say I am truly enjoying (we’re 5-6 episodes in now) is Wayward Pines. Interestingly, I wasn’t expecting it to be a sci-fi show, but that’s pretty much what we’ve got here, and the big reveal in the 4th or 5th episode really was cool, and not something I was expecting at all. What started out as a Twin Peaks-like thing has truly shown that it’s its own thing, and I’m into it. My wife is enjoying it along with me, and she’s even gone as far as buying the first book that this series is based on.

Dark Matter

Another new sci-fi series that just started is Dark Matter, and it’s apparently based on a comic series I haven’t read (from Dark Horse comics). Nice to get a new “ship in space” series, and although from the first episode alone I can’t yet say if it’ll be something I’ll really enjoy – the characters in general are not that interesting so far, except for the android – it did at least end on a pretty interesting reveal that has me wanting to at least give it another couple of episodes.

Killjoys

Been a while since I’ve found a good sci-fi series to watch, and I continue to sample new things that come out. Latest of which is Killjoys, that just had its premiere, from the creators of Orphan Black. Only 1 episode so far, but I think it shows promise. It’s shot pretty stylishly, and the female lead is definitely compelling to watch (and you’d expect to get a compelling lead, coming from the Orphan Black people). Still way too early to tell whether this will be a good show or not – story in the first episode was meh – but I’m willing to give it a few more episodes.
