I wrote about my experience playing the demo that was released alongside the just-launched Kickstarter campaign for the Astro Boy: Edge of Time digital card game, but I wanted to bring it up here as well as a project that I want to highlight. I liked the demo (more of a tech test of the gameplay) and really hope the game gets funded so we get to play the whole thing. Also, my friend Nayan Ramachandran of Playism is heavily involved in the project (he’s working on the story aspect of the game), and he even pops up a bit in the Kickstarter video. I love Tezuka Osamu’s creations — I watched a lot of the Astro Boy anime when I was a kid — and want to see what they’re going to do here, bringing all these characters together in one world.

Pathfinder Adventures

I’ve been wanting this card game for ages, but I never picked it up because it’s pricey, especially when I was in Tokyo and looking at import prices. That’s why I was pretty excited when I found out that they were planning on making an iOS version (and I think it’s also on Android and PC). It finally came out a few weeks ago, and I love it. You can download it for free and play the first three adventures, to get a feel for the game, which is what I did, but then I immediately paid the price for all future releases because I just loved playing it so much (yup, paid 35 bucks for an iOS game). It really is a great implementation of a card game, and you can play it solo (controlling multiple characters) or with friends by passing your device around. As with all digital card/board games, it’s not for everyone, but if you’re looking for a great digital version of what is already considered a fun game, then I think it’s well worth picking up. There are a few ways to pay for it, including through grinding, but I was just so into it that I bought the full bundle.
Rival Books of Aster

I am absolutely falling in love with a new collectible card game on iOS called Rival Books of Aster that just came out (although it seems like it’s currently only available in the Canadian App Store). The gameplay is sort of a cross between Hearthstone and Magic: The Gathering, while still feeling original. The first thing that I found striking though was the overall aesthetic, which includes the card art, all coming off as medieval in style, and quite different from what we usually see from these games. It features a really nice tutorial to teach you how to play, which I’m now getting to the end (the last four steps are to play full matches with a deck based on each of the 4 Houses in the game). Really looking forward to playing much more of this, and I hope I’ll get some friends on board as well. Funny thing is, I hadn’t heard anything about this game, and was led to it by a promotional tweet in my timeline.
Hearthstone
I never thought I’d get into this damn beta, but lo and behold, early last week I received my beta key, and so was able to give it a try. I was really excited to play this, and have to say that they’ve done a really fantastic job of creating a card game for the digital world – meaning, you’re not stuck with the issues affecting bringing Magic: The Gathering to digital, mostly when it comes to having to wait for another player to react to your plays. And it sure looks good, with really wonderful sound design too – I crack up every single time I hear “job’s done” at the end of a turn. I really can’t wait for the iPad version of this to come out though, because that’s how I really want to play this game.
