Far Cry 3

I picked this up back in January on one of those big PSN sales, but just now am I finally getting around to playing it. I’ve put in about 4 hours, and gotta say that I’ve been having a blast running around this island, driving around in old jeeps, swooping around in hang gliders, and hunting to give me upgrades (although this is taking a bit longer than I’d like – being stuck with just one weapon that quickly runs out of ammo is no fun). As much as I appreciated a lot of Far Cry 2, I never did finish it, but I’m still feeling the urge to jump into this and liberate more bases and the like, so I’d say it’s an improvement over the last one. And I’m also excited at the prospect of a Far Cry 4 set in the Himalayas (as current rumors suggest), traversing snow-capped mountain tops like a mad man.

Rain

I recently picked this up during the PSN supersale (I think it was around $3) and I’m glad I did. I think it got mixed reviews when it originally came out, but so far I’m really digging the atmosphere, and the look of the game. It’s a neat idea too, that you’re only visible when rain is falling on you, and I like how the levels play with that.

Tales of Xillia

This is another game I grabbed in this week’s PSN sale, and it’s definitely scratching that JRPG itch I get every once in while. I’ve only played about an hour, so it’s of course too early to tell how much I’ll like this, but so far I’m certainly enjoying the beautiful visuals – some of the best cel-shading I’ve ever seen in a game. The battle system is pretty fun too – basically, what you expect from a Tales game. We’ll see how long I last.

Puppeteer

I grabbed this on the crazy PSN sale this week (until tomorrow), and wow, this really is something special. I’m just astounded by the fantastic art direction, and how everything comes together in presenting something so original and unlike anything else out there. Yeah, it’s a platformer, but it ends up feeling like so much more thanks to the narration, great character designs, and fun mechanics – you often use giant scissors to cut your way through a level. You really need to grab this while it’s still on sale.

NHL 14

I love hockey, and I love watching the Canadiens play – something I stopped doing for about 20 years, but got back into last year. The last time I remember really playing a lot of video game hockey is NHL 2K on the Dreamcast – we’d have hockey playing sessions in my living room, using a projector to screen the game on a wall. One of my friends is still an avid player of hockey games, and he’s been urging me to get back into it, and since NHL 14 was on sale recently at a crazy price of $15 on the PSN Store, I bit the bullet and jumped in. So far, I’m having an absolute blast. It took a few games to get used to the modern controls – using the analog sticks to aim and shoot – but once you’re into it, wow, is it ever fun. Although the Ultimate Team mode scares me a bit – basically, you build a team getting players as cards from packs, which you buy using in-game currency, or real cash – but the idea of it is really fun. I look forward to playing more of this online, and to hopefully get to a point where I can beat my friend.

Sound Shapes

This is like Flower, in that if you have the PS3 version you can download the new PS4 version for free. Since I originally played it on Vita, it’s hard for me to tell how much better it is than the PS3 version, but again, like with Flower, it gave me a nice excuse to revisit the game. I truly love this game – such a great combo of music and visuals – and you really need to own it if you don’t (to play on Vita, PS3, or PS4).

Flower

I decided to play though this again – if you have the PS3 version, you can download the PS4 version for free. It was of course a gorgeous and mesmerizing experience, just like it was the first time I played it, but for me it was hard to really tell how much better it is than the PS3 version, since I remember that initial experience being a gorgeous one as well. It gave me an excuse to play through it again though, which made me happy, and if you’ve never played this then you need to (it’s only like $6-7 on PSN). It also still has the best ending credits sequence ever. I hope they do this to Journey too, as that’s a game I’d also love to revisit on the PS4.

Contrast

This is a flawed game, but the concept behind it is an interesting one. Unfortunately, it involves a lot of platforming, and the mechanics to do so are a bit clumsy. But I like the setting, the idea of using shadows to create your platforming “blocks,” and just wish that gameplay was smoother. But hey, it’s free if you’re a PS+ member, so definitely worth trying out – and I imagine I’ll finish it.

Resogun

This game sure has lovely ‘splosions! Everyone has been raving about this being the best game from the PS4 launch lineup, and they’re certainly right that it’s a fantastic game – and the fact that it’s free if you’re a PS+ member is just nuts. I love shooters, and I’m doing OK at this, but I really need to try and understand how to up my game, because looking at some of my friends’ scores on the leaderboards, I’ve still got a ways to go.
