Akira 3

I’m still in the process of going through Akira again, reading a volume every once in a while. This morning I read through all of volume 3, which is where it starts to diverge the most from the movie. When I read this, it makes me a bit sad that we never got more manga from Otomo, but then again, if that’s what he had to say, then so be it. Can’t complain too much about having such an amazing series like Akira to revisit every few years.

Ajin

A friend recommended the manga series Ajin to me earlier today, and I then proceeded to start reading it feverishly, currently up to volume 3. I so love it when a manga series draws you in like this, and you just can’t stop reading chapter after chapter. It tells the rather violent story of a boy who finds himself to be an Ajin, some sort of immortal non-human (we don’t really know the details yet) that when discovered, get hunted and dissected. I wasn’t so crazy about the art style at first – especially the character designs – but it’s grown on me, or I’ve just gotten used to it. Recommended if you like stuff like Gantz.

And Then There Were None

This mini-series that adapts the Agatha Christie novel couldn’t have come out at a better time, as it was just after I went to a really enjoyable Agatha Christie exhibition here in Montreal, and so I was primed to get back to reading some of her books (I’ve become a big fan of her books only in recent years). I’ve never read the original book (which has multiple titles, including Ten Little Indians), and from what my wife says, for this TV adaptation they did alter things a bit, which is probably for the best (means I’ll still enjoy reading the book). It’s a 3-part mini-series (1 hour each episode), and we pretty much watched the whole thing in one evening, because we were so drawn in. All the performances are fantastic, and the mystery is a great one.

House of Cards

I watched the first season of House of Cards when it was originally released, and quite enjoyed it, but then for some reason never got around to watching the following seasons, even though I did have an interest in doing so. While I was hit with the flu a couple of weeks ago, I binged through seasons 2 and 3, and am currently a bit passed half of season 4, and wow, what a fantastic series. I can definitely now say that it gets added to my top 10 list of all-time favorite TV series. I remember reading that some people felt season 3 was a bit of a disappointment, but I found myself enjoying it just as much as the rest. And I’m really enjoying season 4, and can’t wait to see how it concludes. Gotta love Netflix.

Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday

I thought this was a hell of a fun movie to watch. Sure, it’s not perfect, and there are lots of dud jokes, but overall I found myself laughing quite a bit, and I just dug the general weirdness of the movie, and the general atmosphere. They did a pretty good job at resurrecting Pee-Wee, and I was kinda shocked at how Paul Reubens, who is 63, managed to look so Pee-Wee-like – although I did read after the fact that they used CG on him, and that he was using something that pulled his face back a bit. Well, it worked.

Creed

Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would, including the pretty subdued performance by Stallone. Sure, there are still some cheesy bits – I’m thinking especially of the end of the training montage where he’s running in the streets, followed by the dudes on the bikes, and then starts punching in the air in triumph – but overall it was a pretty satisfying movie to watch, with a decent ending. Wish they would have done more with the girlfriend though, as she was a really interesting character. Looking forward to seeing the continuation of Adonis’s story.
