  • City Pop

On top of that fantastic Shinichiro Yokata mix I mentioned the other day, I’ve also been musically obsessing over “city pop” of late, after I came across this piece. Just let all the YouTube mixes on that page guide you through the smooth sounds of 80s Japan. Kinda goes well with my current 1986 movie…

  • Shinichiro Yokota

Here’s a great mix of tracks by Shinichiro Yokota, courtesy of Fact. Don’t know Yokota? Read this fantastic feature on the collaborative work of Yokota and Soichi Terada (of the Far East Recording label). I can easily imagine dancing to this at the old Space Lab Yellow in Tokyo (which I probably did).

  • Why Is Yasuharu Konishi’s Drama BGM Often Used in Variety Shows?

The title of this post is literally the name of the new compilation that brings together highlights from Yasuharu Konishi’s drama soundtrack work over the past decade — the joke is that it often ends up being used as background music in variety shows as well. I quite like the Debusen soundtrack he did last year…

  • Pizzicato Related

Patrick’s Tokyo’s Coolest Sound site has a few Pizzicato Five-related updates, including a new 7″ singles collection called Ace that is curated by Yasuharu Konishi (including the P5 singles pictured), some new singles by Maki Nomiya that are accompanied by a couple of events, and a new remaster of Pizzicato Five’s Pizzicatomania. It’s a stereoscopic sound spectacular!

  • The Legend of Zelda 30th Anniversary Concert

Patrick’s Tokyo’s Coolest Sound blog has all the details on the new CD/DVD compilation of the anniversary concert that was held for the Legend of Zelda series last year (which I know a few friends had the great luck to attend, bastards).

  • Retro Records

This is a pretty good blog — and Twitter account — if you want to check out old records from Japan. It’s in Japanese, but the point here is really to look at the awesome collection of covers. Looks like they organize a lot of nice events too.

  • The Best of Shibuya-kei, Volume One

You’ll remember that late last year David shared a fantastic series of Pizzicato Five reviews on Neojaponisme, and now he’s shared this terrific mix, a true celebration of Shibuya-kei. I was lucky to get an early draft version of this mix a while back, and it’s been my favorite thing to listen to since (I’ve literally listened…

  • Yama Yama

I’d never heard of the group Yamasuki, or the song “Yama Yama” (from 1971), but I sure like it. Thanks go out to my buddy Eric for bringing it to my attention.

  • Emo

Tokyo’s Coolest Sound has news that Towa Tei is releasing a new album on March 22, called Emo. It features tons of guests — including his supergroup Metafive. You’ll find all the details in this post.

  • Toriena

Patrick Macias’s latest post on Mondo Tokyo covers chiptune artist Toriena, pictured — you might remember me mentioning her back in November, as part of the “Chiptune Primer” post on Bandcamp’s blog.
