The Red Turtle

gzj3vzy

Last night I watched The Red Turtle, and I really don’t think there’s any other movie I saw this year that I enjoyed more. A mesmerizing and touching tale told with no dialogue, beautifully animated. I can’t recommend it enough, and it really makes me happy that Studio Ghibli believed in a project like this enough to put its banner on it — even though it was quite shocking for me to see it in red, like you see pictured.

Till He Dies

If you’ve watched the excellent documentary about Studio Ghibli, The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness, then you already know that director Hayao Miyazaki isn’t the easiest of people to work with/for, and a recent NHK documentary shows that, well, he hasn’t changed much. This Kotaku article does a great job of sharing some of the highlights from the program, which also includes Miyazaki learning to use a computer for animation, and some talk on a new feature film he’d like to make.

TV Commercials by Studio Ghibli

screen-shot-2016-09-22-at-21-59-05

Over the years, Studio Ghibli (or its alumni) has produced quite a few animated TV commercials. My friend Christopher was digging these up, and shared a few, like this one for Nisshin (pictured), this one for JR West, this one for sake, for bread, and again for bread.

The Legend of Zelda Meets Ghibli

screen-shot-2016-09-20-at-23-49-59

The following trailer by Matt Vince for an imaginary The Legend of Zelda animated film by Studio Ghibli is borderline torture (while being fantastic at the same time). Oh to dream for such a thing to happen. He created the trailer following the popularity of a few posters he produced last year that imagined such a film happening.

The Red Turtle

I don’t think there’s a movie I want to see this year more than The Red Turtle — a co-production between Studio Ghibli and Wild Bunch — and it annoys me to no end that there still doesn’t seem to be an official North American release date in sight (it opened in France during the summer, and in Japan this week). In the meantime, I just regularly re-watch the trailer.

Studio Ghibli Merch at Hot Topic

screen-shot-2016-09-11-at-18-09-41

Hot Topic has a surprising large amount of merch — t-shirts, hoodies, and more — based on properties from Ghibli movies (like the My Neighbor Totoro tee pictured in this post). Most of it is surprisingly cheap too. Found via my buddy Shane.

The Borrower Arrietty

Studio Ghibli has announced that it will be releasing a new film next summer, to be directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, an animator for the company (this will be his directorial debut). The film’s title is The Borrower Arrietty, and is based on the British story The Borrowers, “an enchanting story about miniature people living under the floorboards of a home.” Via Spoon & Tamago.
