Wind Waker HD

I’d been wanting this ever since I got my Wii U in January, but being the cheap bastard that I am, was waiting for a deal. I finally picked it up through the Mario Kart 8 promotion (you can get a free copy of this, Pikmin 3, Wii U Party, or New Super Mario Bros. U), and I’m still in awe of how gorgeous this game looks now on my TV screen. And you know what? On a weekend where I also got Mario Kart 8, I ended up playing more of this, and it really felt just so damn good to be doing it. This is the 3rd time I’ll be playing this game, and it makes me so happy that it feels like such a new experience. I can honestly say that this is my favorite gaming experience this year so far.

Mario Kart 8

You’ve probably heard all of the praise for this game already (except maybe for the new “Battle Mode,” which is not liked by many, but that I haven’t tried yet). My first impression when I started playing it on the day it came out was that it felt “magical.” That’s the sensation you first feel as you start playing, in this beautiful colorful world (it’s just astounding how good this game looks, even compared to PS4), with a fun soundtrack, and tracks that just constantly wowed me by their originality. I’m no Mario Kart expert or super fan – the last version I played was the one on the DS – but I’ve been having a blast playing through all of the tracks over and over during the weekend, and also going online for some races. I’m now at a point where I’m trying to figure out how I can improve my play (I can consistantly win at 50cc and 100cc, but I’m still pretty hit-and-miss at 150cc, especially after I do a couple of bad turns) and that’s really what you want a game to make your feel. I can’t wait to play some local multiplayer with friends soon.

Nintendo Land

I finally got to play some multiplayer Nintendo Land last night, and it was an absolute blast. Before that I had tried a few of the solo games, and although they were fine, it wasn’t really the kind of thing I’d go back to. But having a bunch of friends over and playing through stuff like the Luigi’s Mansion or Animal Crossing inspired games were just so damn fun. But man, there were some frustrating – and downright ridiculous – things to deal with. First off is that for some reason, Nintendo Land refuses to let you use a pro controller for any of the games – I had the Wii U controller and two Wiimotes, and a friend brought over his pro controller. It makes no sense. Also, when you play most of these games, you are using the Wiimotes sideways (as NES-style controllers), but for some reason, only on the screen where you select your avatars, you have to hold them like a remote to make the selection (not by pointing, but just to use the digital pad to make the selection). Sure, it’s small stuff, but it really doesn’t make sense. I will say that the aesthetics are incredibly colorful, and it’s simply a beautiful game to play, even compared to stuff you see on the PS4. It’s also a nice touch that you see video of the face of the person who is using the Wii U controller on the TV screen on some of the games. I look forward to playing more of this next time I have friends over.

Super Mario 3D World

So yes, just over a week ago, I finally got my hands on a Nintendo Wii U (and big thanks to my friend who made that possible). Despite the dismal news on the health of the console, I always knew I would eventually get one, and was just being patient, waiting for the games that I absolutely wanted to play to come out. Well, when I saw Super Mario 3D World in action, I knew it was time, and playing through it has been an absolute joy – and it means I have to update yet again my list of “Favorite Media of 2013.” The thing with a Mario game is that while I’m playing, I have a big stupid grin on my face the whole time, due to the joyous gameplay, the music – which my wife actually occasionally dances to – and the colorful aesthetics and sound effects. I fell in love again with Mario games after I played Super Mario 3D Land on 3DS last year, and this love continues. And despite the guts of the Wii U being last-gen, it’s just amazing how good this game looks – unlike the feeling I get when playing PS3 games after spending time on my PS4. And yes, being able to continue playing on the tablet controller when my wife wants to watch TV is as practical as I thought it would be – sure, the screen is not that great, but it’s still incredible useful for someone like me. Lastly, my request to Nintendo: please release HD remakes of the 2 Super Mario Galaxy games, that I can play with a regular controller.
