  • I was a bit surprised when I saw that the new issue of PEN (171) on the stands was square-bound, but since it covers fashion, I imagine it’s probably just for this issue — pretty much any Japanese magazine that does a fashion cover feature gets a higher page count, mostly because of ads.
  • The latest BRUTUS (589) also plays around with its format a bit, offering a clear (see-through) extra cover that creates a nice effect with the image underneath. The cover feature states, “It’s All Happening @ the Zoo,” and what you get is a guide to zoos around the world, exposing the latest in zoo architecture/animal dwellings. There’s also a pull-out guide, and a sticker sheet.
