  • PechaKucha + Aichi Triennale 2016

It’s good to see that my PechaKucha family is still going strong, and I loved seeing in the latest Japan newsletter that they’re going to produce a special PechaKucha Night as part of the Aichi Triennale 2016 (on September 22 in Nagoya). Pictured, an image from the presentation by performance arts curator Akiko Fujii.

  • Metafive at the Montreux Jazz Festival Japan

Metafive — the supergroup featuring Keigo Oyamada (Cornelius), Towa Tei, Yoshinori Sunahara, Yukihiro Takahashi, Tomohiko Gondo, and Leo Imai — will be performing next month at the special Japan edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival (October 7, at the Garden Hall). Would so love to see them live — and love Cornelius’s look in the…

  • Supplement: Tokyo

Oh how I’d love to attend the first edition of the new talk/lecture series called Supplement: Tokyo. The first edition (on October 4) will have a list of speakers that includes two friends I think are smart as fuck (W. David Marx and Chris Palmieri), and will be moderated by one of the best dudes, period…

  • RYO-Z & PES & Tofubeats & PlayStation

Sony tried something new with the sizzle reel that kicked off its pre-Tokyo Game Show PlayStation conference yesterday. The great 5-minute video features RYO-Z and PES of the group RIP SLYME, rapping about the included games on top of beats provided by Tofubeats. It’s fun stuff, and makes for an entertaining way to take in the lineup.

  • Too Much Magazine at Tokyo Art Book Fair

If you dig into the archives of this site, you’ll find tons of posts about my relationship with Audrey and Yoshi, previously of OK Fred magazine (from where we spun off Radio OK Fred) and now Too Much magazine. The latest issue is all about climber Naoki Ishikawa, and while at the Tokyo Art Book Fair (September…

  • Tabling at Comiket

I’m embarrassed to say that despite my absolute love of manga (and comics in general), I’ve never once made it out to Comiket (“Comic Market”), the world’s largest comics convention, focusing on fan/unlicensed comics, and held twice annually at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center. I have plenty of friends who have gone, but reading…

  • Controller of Controller

Yesterday I wrote about this year’s edition of the Dotmov digital film festival, and I just watched one of the entries which I quite enjoyed, Controller of Controller. Directed by Densuke28, it’s an Inception-like experience of a player playing a game, and then playing a game within that game (see, told you it was Inception-like).…

  • Dotmov Festival 2016

As I go through my site’s archives, I’m reminded of how much I loved annual digital short film festivals — like Resfest and Onedotzero. Most of these don’t exist anymore, but one that still continues with its annual showing is Shift magazine‘s Dotmov, with the 2016 edition about to hit the road. Although the best experience remains…

  • Tomoyuki Tanaka

I can’t believe it. The image you see here (of Shibuya station, from this Architizer post) was drawn first by pencil, and then pen, by Tomoyuki Tanaka. He has created these massive and insanely detailed works for various stations, and they’re currently on show at the “Doboku Civil Engineering” exhibition at 21_21 Design Sight.

  • House Vision 2

It’s too late to take in the “House Vision 2” exhibition (it ended this past Sunday) but you can still experience some of the highlights courtesy of this Japan Times piece, written by Mio Yamada, who was the last editor of my “On Design” column (and who continues to write it now). The exhibition offered a…
