  • La photo sonore

The other day I was invited to do a 45-minute Japanese music spotlight on my friend’s college radio show (the same station where I used to have a show). I only had time to play 10 tracks (I had prepared 20 before going), and here’s what the playlist looked like: 1. Shugo Tokumaru – “Typewriter”…

  • An Interview with Puffy

Nicholas D. Kent sends me news that he’s just posted online an interview he did with the group Puffy back in 2002. Done to provide quotes for a magazine article, it wasn’t originally planned as a published interview. While on the subject of Puffy, I know that they’ve recently developed a following in America with…

  • Kiiiiiii at Komaba

Tomorrow (Sunday) is the big school festival on the Komaba campus of Tokyo University, and Kiiiiiii will be performing, along with Spank Happy (Halcali was supposed to perform also, but they pulled out). Kiiiiiii will hit the stage from 3:50 to 4:20. The show is free (or something like a donations welcome kind of thing).

  • Ongaku no Susume

Patrick has all the info on the upcoming Halcali album, ONGAKU NO SUSUME. I must say that I’m disappointed with the new single, “Baby Blue,” but I still look forward to hearing the LP.

  • Strawberry Chips

Presently listening to the sweet sounds of the new Halcali single, “Strawberry Chips.” I’m also still getting a kick out of seeing that TV ad, which is on high rotation right now.

  • Dance

As I wrote in a comment thread last night, I have a thing for odd/awkward dancing. It definitely explains why I like Halcali so much, and back in the day Puffy. It’s also why I absolutely love Andre 3000’s “Hey Ya!” video (sure, there’s also the fact that it’s an impossibly catchy tune that I…

  • Adam and Joe and Maiwa Denki

I know I might be overdoing it with the posts on ADAM AND JOE GO TOKYO, but I need to mention that episode 4 features and absolutely fascinating look at the insides of the Maiwa Denki factory, and features a closing performance by one of my biggest guilty pleasures of the year, the helplessly addictive…
