  • Axis 106

Picked up the new issue of AXIS today, with a cover and interview with Jacques Herzog (whose new Prada shop in Aoyama has been the talk of the town), and an excellent feature on prototypes. Pretty, pretty toys for me to gawk at (one of my favorites hobbies for sure).

  • Arigatt

I was at the Junkudo bookstore earlier today, leafing through a food/dining magazine called ARIGATT, and these are a few cafes mentioned that have recently opened and that I’d like to check out. Pure Cafe Minami-Aoyama 5-5-21 House + Roppongi 5-5-1 UA Cafe Jingumae 3-28-1 Sawa Cafe Saikucho (near Shinjuku) 1-1

  • Mannequins

These were just standing there, in a quiet neighborhood, not near a shop, under a train overpass. I won’t ask any questions if you don’t.

  • Tokyo Zance

Tsunku is best known as the svengali behind the Morning Musume empire (also known as Hello Productions), but he also dabbles in other things, one of them being film production. Until last year, he was running an independant film production company called Tsunku Town Films, which was accompanied by a TV show. What was so…

  • Grandmaster Jii-san

Here’s another figure I got the other day, this time from a gacha-gacha machine. It’s from the RELAX magazine series (I have two more of them). Meet Grandmaster Jii-san! Update (16/08/13): The photos is unfortunately no longer available. I assure you though, he was appropriately funky.

  • Tokyo VR

Patrick has a cool Quicktime VR at his site of a flea market in Shinjuku. I want to try doing one of those.

  • Kimutaku in Shanghai

There’s a news conference on TV right now by uber-idol Takuya Kimura (or Kimutaku as he’s known) from Shanghai. He’s there filming scenes in Wong Kar-wai’s long-awaited next project, 2046. The movie forms a sort of follow-up to IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE. Tony Leung’s character from that film also stars in this one, and…

  • Mobile Novels

I didn’t know these existed, but they seem to be popular. From AICN: Popular mobile novel (you can only read it by moblie phone through the net) “Deep Love” will make it to the big screen. Michika Shigeizumi won the leading role through an audition of 1600 candidates. It tells the story of a 17…

  • Tokyo Designer’s Block – Central East

Next week (November 7-16) will bring us the Tokyo Designer’s Block -Central East, which sounds like a very interesting event. Read the column at REALTOKYO by Noriyuki Tajima for more info. Kanda/Bakuro-cho/Higashi-nihonbashi/Nihonbashi/Ningyucho/Hacchobori area as venues for events happening between November 7 and 16, the “Tokyo Designers’ Block — Central East” (TDB-CE) presents a new approach…

  • Analog pixels

Feel young. Be creative. Visit Pixelblocks and try out their DIGITAL STAINED GLASS? generator. I grew up with lots of LEGO so I would rather build with those pieces, but a fun project anyway. Link from the excellent design portal K10K. Recommended reading for inspiration: “Douglas Coupland – Microserfs” one of my all time favourites.…
