Episodes

This series doesn’t seem to get talked about much, but it’s really great, and so funny. Yeah, it’s yet another take on the ridiculousness of Hollywood, but done in a very fun way – a network brings over British creators of a series they want to adapt to the US – and the leads are great, and that includes Matt LeBlanc (who plays himself). Very happy that the third season has started.

Community

After the last season, I was pretty sure I was done with Community. Even after they announced the return of Dan Harmon, I just couldn’t get excited about it, as it really felt like the show had jumped the shark, and there was no going back. Well, curiosity got the better of me, and so I watched the first 2 episodes of the new season, and I think I’ll be watching more. What I’m digging is that they’ve toned down the wackiness (a tad), and that’s refreshing. And the bit with Abed doing Nicholas Cage in episode 2 was pretty damn great.

Helix

This is a new show from Ronald Moore (Battlestar Galactica), and 3 episodes in (the opener counted as 2 episodes) I’m already wondering how they can sustain an entire season of this, since it already seems like so many people are affected by the virus they’ve gone to investigate. It’s pretty interesting so far – and creepy – and I like the middle-of-the-arctic setting for it. Also, some really interesting musical choices throughout, including for the opening title. Still not completely sucked in, but willing to give it a few more episodes.

Shameless

It’s crazy how enjoyable it is to watch this series, and I’m glad to see that everything is still on track. Very much looking forward to seeing what kind of mess the family is going to get in this season.

True Detective

Oh man, we’re only 1 episode in and I’m already sold on this show. The two leads are both fantastic – especially McConaughey – and I really like how this story is being told, as a retelling of things past, and that apparently links up with something happening now. Looks like we’re in for a great ride.

Girls

It’s good to have Girls back, although I don’t know if I really like the show as much as I did. I guess it depends on where they go this season, but I wasn’t particularly wowed by the first 2 episodes, although the Amy Schumer bit was pretty funny, and Kim Gordon was pretty funny too. I also loved the track that plays during the closing credits of the season premiere episode, which I later found out is the track “It’s On” by Broncho.

My Ham Sandwich

It’s the simple things.

Here’s what my favorite sandwich that I make at home looks like: bread in the form of a baguette fromGontran Cherrier, a little bit of mayonnaise (Kewpie, if you must know), and then slices of ham.

That’s it.

I remember making this sandwich once and a friend made some sort of comment about it being a poor man’s sandwich. That simply wasn’t the case.

Sure, I enjoy eating all sorts of sandwiches, some that are also similarly simple, some that have a ton of shit in them. But the point of the sandwich that I make is that by including only those 3 ingredients, I really get to enjoy and taste each fully. Add lettuce? The texture will change, and it’ll cover some of the other tastes. Add in some tomatoes and onions? Yeah, that can be good, but again, it then turns into this new mixture of tastes.

But what’s wrong with simply wanting to eat my basic ham sandwich?

I drink my coffee black, with no sugar. I’m quite happy eating a one topping pizza. Please serve my cinnamon roll as is, hold the raisins, nuts, and whatever else you thought was needed to accentuate the taste.

Nothing accentuates a taste like keeping things simple, and minimal.

Space Dandy

Shinichiro Watanabe’s new series, Space Dandy, has started, and although I wasn’t particularly excited by the trailers, I was still going to watch this because it’s by Watanabe. After one episode, although I loved the crazy sudden ending, I’m not that sold on the setting and especially the main characters – not getting a Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo vibe at all. But like I said, it’s Watanabe, so I’ll give the series at least a few episodes to see if it develops into something that’s more interesting. And I’m all for sexiness in any form of media, but this “Boobies” stuff just feels juvenile – I’m hoping the show starts to leave that stuff behind.

Orphan Black

I kept hearing really good things about this series, and so finally decided to give it a go, and I’m sure glad I did. I’m only 2 episodes in (of a 10-episode first season) and really digging the slow reveal of what is really happening here – as the main character starts discovering clones of herself – and can’t wait to see where it all goes. I was really surprised to find out that it’s a Canadian series – even though I’m Canadian, I can’t say that Canada is particularly good at producing good TV drama. Season 2 is already set to happen – starts in April – and so it sounds like this show has legs.

Star Wars Pinball: Balance of the Force

I love pinball, I love Zen Pinball 2, and I especially love the Star Wars tables. I recently got the second set of SW tables that were released for the game, Balance of the Force, and wow. I truly believe that these are the best Star Wars games that have come out in years. I get such a charge from playing them, with the amazing music and sound/voice effects that really make me fall in love with the series all over again (yes, it is possible to wash away the bad taste from the prequels). And as much as I already loved playing these on PS3 and Vita, they are astoundingly beautiful on PS4. Also, note that although Zen Pinball 2 purchases are cross-platform (PS3/PS4/Vita), you need to buy them on PS3 or Vita and then import them in the PS4 version of the game – if you buy them in the PS4 version, you can’t access them in your PS3 or Vita versions of the game.
